At some point in the next 8 years, a majority of Americans are going to look back on the Bush years as the “good old days.”  No, I’m not referring directly to the Obama presidency and its probable demolition of our last bits of real capitalism, or another dramatic leftward shift in the Supreme Court.  What should concern Americans about the future is that a new Cold War is what we’ll get if we’re lucky.

 Consider:  Russia invaded Georgia this summer chiefly to control the flow of oil and natural gas from the east into Western Europe, and to send a message to the US:  we’re ready to rumble again.  http://www.financialsense.com/stormwatch/geo/pastanalysis/2008/0808.html  Russia is again wading in almost anywhere in the world where someone has a beef with America, and always on the other side.  It controls the lions’ share of fuel into Europe and has by far the largest military in the region.  Why would it not attempt a return to star power, especially considering the egos running the show?

This is just one piece of the pie that President-Elect Obama has to look forward to.  This isn’t even taking into account the aggressive actions of China and Iran and the real possibility of collusion between those countries and Russia against American interests globally.  What happens when Russia pulls a “Georgia” on the Ukraine?  Will the US intervene and risk another “unpopular” war, or will we do nothing and watch Russia become a much stronger power than ever, in the face of a waning US dollar and weakened American political will?  Will an Obama administration, with its focus on domestic events, be staffed or positioned to deal with such aggression appropriately?  Will President Obama consider conciliation and American apology as appropriate?

No matter what people say about President Bush, there’s no denying he gave us 7 years after 9/11 without another large-scale attack on our soil.  In the near future we’re going to pine for those times.
